I suppose that I bought this excellent CD (having heard one track on Humphrey Lyttelton’s Best of Jazz show on Radio 2) way back in 1994 and have never regretted doing so. I think that Deirdre Cartwright may have been a “rocker” rather than a “jazzer”. This is definitely jazz, but inevitably has the beat associated with rock guitar. Eight of the nine excellent tracks are home grown written by DC, and one vocal track by the singer Josefina Cupido with DC.
Deirdre and her partner, Alison Rayner (bass) have been important in promoting women in music, especially in jazz through the organisation Blow The Fuse (who have promoted this CD). Other musicians here are the Australian Louise Elliott (sax / flute), Gary Hammond (percussion), Chris Baron (d), Steve Lodder (keyboards) and vocalist Josefina Cupido.
The tunes are inventive and engaging and have wonderful titles such ad “Slippers 15s 8p”. Despite its age this is a album still worth buying.
